How to Repair Scratched CD/DVD
CD - Compact Disc, a digital medium formed of a 12cm polycarbonate substrate which is a tough, dimensionally stable and transparent thermoplastic that has many applications which demand high performance properties, a reflective metalized layer, and a protective lacquer coating. The physical format of CDs is described by the ISO9660 industry standard. CD-Recordable (CD-R) discs also have an organic dye data layer between the substrate and the metal reflective layer.
A scratched CD/DVD is easy to be repaired by simply applying toothpaste on the scratched area or all the surface. Wait about 5 minutes, rinse with warm water and wipe the CD with a clean dried cloth.
Instead of calling ‘repair’, I rather called it ‘polish’. Because of the CD made-of, polishing a disc can easily remove the stubborn dirt from the outer plastic coating and thus making existing scratches shallower. Not only toothpaste, Brasso are probably the most tried-and-true, and other likes polishing material for your car will do.
Note: If you are using Brasso or other polishing material, do not rinse with water. Wipe it off with a clean cotton will do.
When you are actually ‘polishing’ by the mean of rubbing in a circular motion can cause small scratches that throw off the laser tracking system in the player. This video show you how to polish a scratched CD with toothpaste:
